I've always loved gardening. I also grew my own pumpkins and watermelons as a teen. I've also had past volunteer experience in food deserts (a 1 mile urban area that lacks access to nutritious and affordable food, 10 miles for rural areas). Choosing my focus to be in agriculture became very obvious after I started taking classes that had an agriculture focus and when I became more aware of the importance of food and agriculture.

Florida Alternative Breaks: 180 Degree Farm
This is a sustainable agriculture farm that is family run. The farm is located in Sharpsburg, Georgia. Most of the that is produced is donated to the local cancer treatment center. We got to plant and fertilize potatoes. We also got to lay down some compost and hay onto the fields. We even got to spread minerals onto the field by hand. This trip was a lot of fun, especially since I often do not get to work outside.
Field and Fork Garden
The Field and Fork Garden is a sustainable and organic garden on campus where students can volunteer. The garden provides the Field and Fork Pantry on campus with fresh produce. The garden also hosts farm to table events for the UF community to learn more about where their food comes from and on campus resources for food insecurity.
