Course Reflection
Comparative World Agriculture
|
The course covers the major trading blocks of the world. This class made me realize how much food plays a role in our daily lives. I also gained a deeper understanding on how food, agriculture, trade, and politics effect international relations. My favorite part about the class is that professors from different countries had recorded lectures about their respective trading block and their personal experiences.

International Humanitarian Assistance
This course covered the different turning points in the humanitarian aid system and how it has been shaped to what it is today. I learned about international organizations and how they have different roles in humanitarian aid. There are humanitarian aid practices that are highly politicized and that some countries work for their own best interest at the cost of efficiency and effectiveness. From this class I have gained a more realistic view and understanding on how humanitarian aid works.
Geography of Africa
This course covers the different physical and social aspects of Africa. The course identifies and descries physical and cultural features of Africa. Human-environmental interactions were also studied and analyzed. Part of the class included writing two research papers. My first paper was about sustainable agriculture practices in Africa and how increasing these practices can help develop communities. My second paper was about gender inequality in Africa. Women face unequal access to education, economic markets, and land rights.
Conservation of Resources
The class viewed environmental issues as social issues and introduced worldwide environmental problems. The class focused on the sustainable use of the environment. The first part of the class covered the 3 mainstream different views/philosophies of environmental use. Each section covered an environmental issue with relation to other social concepts and included case studies to explain the complex and dynamic environmental issues.
Plants that Feed the World
This class covered the most important food crops of society. I learned about the origins of these food crops and where they are grown today. The class covered environmental issues related to plants and food. The most interesting part that we learned about was human domestication of crops and compared to their wild varieties.
